No More Fossil Fuels: Pathway for Samsung and Korea to build Green Yongin Semiconductor Cluster

About

Executive summary

Samsung plans to invest more than 300trillion KRW ($230 billion) into the Yongin National Semicondcutor Cluster to expand its semiconductor production in South Korea. Despite the fact that Samsung has committed to achieveing RE100 by 2050, the semiconductor cluster would be fueled by new LNG power plants being built within the Cluster. The report lays out scenarios to replace the 3GW LNG power plants with renewable energy available in the region. The report's findings show that Samsung, by choosing renewable energy over fossil fuels, can save up to 30trillion KRW ($21 billion) in electricity cost. Considering that social costs are not inclued in this figure, the total benefit of replacing the LNG power plants with renewables is likely to be higher. Please find out more about the findings in the full report.
